The people of Powell River have signed on this petition request a repeal of yearly property taxation and property tax foreclosure practices in the Province of British Columbia levied on our property/ land, home or dwellings including all structures on private land, mineral rights, business, farm, church and rent property, etc.
For grievances as follows:
1. Denies the property owner the freedom of choice to opt out of this form of taxation that threatens ownership of home and land without prior consent of the home and land owner that offer no true rights and no equitable remedy.
2. Erodes the equity of home and land ownership.
3. Discourages needed improvements and repairs on ones property due to fear of property tax increases after reappraisal on such improvements and or alterations.
4. Degradation and loss of historical buildings and older homes in ageing neighborhoods as a result stated on line 3.
5. Displaces rightful owners from their own property leaving them to fend for themselves unnecessarily.
6. Tax burden imbalance in the form of double taxation on the property owner.
7. Punishes and penalizes the property owner for a property tax burden that was not condoned, approved or requested by the home or land owner in violation stated on line 1.
8. Discourages home ownership of young and low income families for fear of escalating property taxes and loosing it to property tax foreclosure.
9. Punishes and burdens the poor and working poor already financially strapped.
10. Property tax foreclosures erode neighborhoods and communities by displacing once well-established and responsible homeowner's families from their homes. 11. Taxes should be frozen immediately and allow the property owner via elected vote to decide the amount of increase once every five years. Thereby allowing the democratic process of the people decide the future increases of municipal tax increases.
