Dear Sir/Madam,

The arrest of Sri Vijayendra Saraswati Swamiji by the Tamil Nadu police has come as a rude shock to Hindus across the world. Different media reports suggest that this is a politically motivated, vindictive arrest. Whatever the merits of the case, there was no need for the Kanchi seer to be arrested in kanchepuram While doing puja. We do not believe that there was either a public or private need for such an attack on the pontiff of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.

The arrest and shaming of the Kanchi seer is a slap to Hindus as well as Hinduism, and we fear a concerted campaign of defamation of Hindu symbols, leaders, and ideals.

This arrest of Swamiji is an affront to the one billion Hindus around the world. We urge the immediate release of the Kanchi Junior Seer, a probe into the mode and method of arrest, and an apology by those who have orchestrated and carried out this willful act.
