No production in Broadway history has had the cultural impact that Rent has.
Jonathan Larsons magnum opus has spread a message of love, living and friendship that has resonated in the millions of fans that have seen the show around the world. To many, Rent was more than just another great production. Rent changed the way we looked at the world and the people around it. Rent inspired a voice for those who did not have one before.
Rent changed lives for the better. On the business side, Rent introduced rush tickets, and in doing so created a new opportunity for people to see this show. Many productions have followed Rents lead, and now offer rush or lottery tickets for their shows. The rush ticket continues to provide an affordable way for people to see a great show, whatever show that may be, and we can thank Rent for that.
The show may end on Broadway, but Jonathan Larsons vision will live on forever through the many people who have been touched by Rent, as well as through current and future productions around the world.
We request that in recognition of the contribution Jonathan Larsons Rent has made to the Broadway community, that the David T. Nederlander Theatre be renamed the Jonathan Larson Theatre.
We ask that the Nederlander Organization consider our request as their way of saying what many fans have said in the past 12 years: Thank you, Jonathan Larson.
