As loyal U.S. soccer fans, we were shocked and dismayed by what we consider the mishandling of negotiations between U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati and Jeurgen Klinsmann regarding the U.S. Mens National Team head coaching position. We affirm the following: It is a crushing blow to almost every single serious U.S. soccer fan that Mr. Gulati was unable to come to terms with Mr. Klinsmann. After literally months of negotiations, numerous accounts of how close we came to securing Klinsmanns services, and even the blessing of the great Pelй, Mr. Gulati was unable to deliver what almost everyone believed to be a foregone conclusion, as well as the most logical decision. This is an inexcusable disgrace. Klinsmann would bring immediate respect, expertise, swagger, and most importantly, positive and far-reaching exposure for U.S. soccer, both at home and internationally, all of which we are sorely lacking. It is our belief that, particularly following an embarrassing performance by the Mens National Team in the 2006 World Cup, U.S. Soccer requires a head coach who can not only bring a winning tradition to the program, but who can also serve as a charismatic and recognizable ambassador for this great game. We believe that such a man exists, and even though he may require substantial freedom to run the program the way he sees fit, the benefits of hiring this man clearly outweigh the risks. Mr. Gulati, we ask you to do what you can to move The Beautiful Game forward in this country, to a place the rest of the world doesnt seem to think it can go, but to where we know it can, by reexamining the head coaching position, and hiring Juergen Klinsmann.
