We are writing to urge you not to cut funding for highly capable learners in the supplemental budget when you address the 2009-11 budget shortfall. We are dismayed at the negative impact that this will have - please do not take this action!
Thousands of children across our state need access to education that will ensure their human potential. Gifted education is not an expendable 'add-on' that should be sacrificed in an economic downturn. It is the Constitutional right of every child in our state to have a public, basic education. For gifted children, this means access to a gifted education.
In a study cited by the National Association of Gifted Children, it was found that between 18 and 25\% of highly capable learners drop out of school. We simply cannot afford the state budget costs and human cost of more drop-outs. And, as we work to improve science, technology and math, to be competitive as a state internationally, we especially cannot afford to sacrifice gifted education. We know this, and the business community knows this.
Our children need you. Please do the right thing. Preserve funding for the highly capable.
