As Sandy Maguires students, former students, and colleagues, we strongly object to the actions of the Acalanes Union High School district in placing her on administrative leave and in effectively canceling Miramonte High Schools public speaking program. As an English and Public Speaking teacher at Miramonte for nearly thirty years, Ms. Maguire has had a profound affect upon all of us, and we know that without the public speaking skills that she has taught, her former students would not where they are today. Ms. Maguire is among the most respected public speaking coaches in the nation. This year, the National Forensic League plans to present her with the prestigious fifth diamond award at their national convention
In light of the many extracurricular trips approved by the District in the past, Ms. Maguires suspension for taking public speaking students on a supervised trip to Disneyland after school hours is unprecedented. We demand that Ms. Maguire be immediately be reinstated to the classroom and that all public speaking events at Miramonte continue as planned for the remainder of the school year.
