We are shocked and dismayed at the decision made by the board of trustees for the Atlanta Ballet to eliminate the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, a vital and essential part of the company since the 1960's.
The flowing, breathtaking beauty of Atlanta Ballet's talented dancers performing to glorious live music is an experience that people in Atlanta and throughout the Southeast look forward to in its entirety as a family cultural event. However, patrons will receive no reductions in ticket prices for the watering-down of these productions; instead, they will be paying full price for a compromised product and be expected to ignore the marked difference in quality.
For years, the musicians in the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra have not only provided outstanding professional music but have served as dedicated Atlanta Ballet ambassadors by their generous fielding of questions from literally thousands of curious ticket holders. For many of these patrons, the orchestra pit is the only place they are able to personally interact with one of Atlanta's crown jewel art forms.
We strongly encourage you to reconsider such a drastic, short-sighted move that has long-term financial and artistic consequences for the Atlanta Ballet and the entire cultural arts society in Atlanta. We feel we will not be able in good faith to attend future performances of the Atlanta Ballet and will encourage others to do the same until the orchestra is back in its proper place as the heart and soul of the company.

I've watched ballet companies fold after changing from live to taped music. The spirit goes out of the production. The public loses interest. The company loses support. This is a major error in judgment.
