Save the Cafe

Under the management of Godfrey Palaia, the University Cafe has


supported valuable social and cultural activities at Stony Brook


University. The Cafe provides Stony Brook faculty, staff, and student


groups at both the graduate and undergraduate levels with a clean,


well-equipped venue for events, gatherings and celebrations, and


which accommodates student and faculty needs and supports community


activities.





Even though Starbucks Corporation is notorious for failing to support


community activities, the board of directors of the Faculty Student


Association is considering replacing our Cafe with a green and white,


corporate, cookie-cutter, community-killing coffee shop. We won't


stand for it!





The General Manager of the University Cafe, Godfrey Palaia, helps


make possible several of the great events at Stony Brook University


year after year. He is not compensated for his time spent organizing


popular affairs, such as the Roth Pond Regatta, the Sunday Concert


Series, and Earth Stock. Godfrey has provided equipment and support


to student clubs and organizations for years. He continues to be


known as the person to work with at the University to put on an event.





Maintaining student control over the University Cafe with Mr. Palaia


as GM insures that student clubs and campus organizations will


continue to benefit from the Cafe's facilities and Mr. Palaia's


expertise. Therefore, we make the following demands:





1. A Starbucks should not replace the University Cafe. The University


Cafe should remain under the control of the Graduate Student


Organization and under the management of Godfrey Palaia.





2. The Administration and Undergraduate Student Government should


provide the Cafe with a subsidy commensurate with their use of its


facilities, including its equipment and the time and expertise of its


employees.





3. Godfrey Palaia is a highly valued member of our Stony Brook


Community and should have job security and proper compensation.
