We, the undersigned students, alumni, faculty and community members, are extremely concerned about the elimination of the Women's Studies major at the University of Western Australia. We urge you to immediately overturn this decision.
Gender studies offer invaluable contributions to academia and society at large. They are essential to advancing marginalised discourses. Not only do they critique and challenge relationships between women and men, but they genuinely and consistently address other progressive issues in critical feminist scholarship, queer theory, and anti-oppression, such as racism, classism and homophobia.
The University of Western Australia is to be one of only two G8 universities not to offer a Women or Gender Studies as a major. This is shameful. (We note the University of Adelaide offers it as a minor but because students can take 6 units we feel this is comparable to a major).
We look forward to your immediate response and your assurances that the University will take steps to reinstate the Womens Studies major and ensure is available to all current and future students.
