We ordinary Scots wish to apologise for the disgusting decision to release the mass-murderer Megrahi.
This decision was taken without our permission and is contrary to all sense of justice or humanity. We believe that Megrahis crime was so heinous that justice and decency demanded he serve out his days in a Scottish prison.
We believe his release to be a deep stain on our proud nation and an insult to the bereaved.
Scotland the USA have a long shared history. Like all friendships it has had its ups and down but it thrives because of the love and respect of millions of citizens of both countries down the centuries.
In two world wars Scottish and American servicemen and women have stood shoulder to shoulder in the battlefields of Europe, in the air over Nazi Germany, on the high seas, in the jungles of the Far East and the burning sands of Africa.
Scotland so often the cradle of ideas of reformation, liberty and enlightenment has given much to America and in return, in our darkest hours, the great republic, the arsenal of democracy, has been a staunch friend.
Today Scots and American soldiers, sailors and airmen again stand together against the forces of tyranny - in the mountains of Afghanistan and the plains of Iraq - the best of both nations serving the best of ideals.
That is an example and a legacy that towers over the shame of Megrahis release.
