We, the undersigned, are strongly opposed to the land tenure application number 6406136 by Last Frontier Heliskiing that takes in our whole snowmobile riding area. We have serious concerns that potential conflicts will eventually threaten our freedom to snowmobile in this very special area, as we have done for many years. We have seen several snowmobile riding areas in British Columbia impacted in a negative way by heliskiing.
There was a Town Council meeting October 18th in Stewart B.C. that was organized to have a discussion between Last Frontier, the Bordertown Snowbombers, Land and Water B.C., and concerned citizens of Stewart. This meeting had the largest attendance ever for a town council meeting in Stewart, with 40 to 45 people, most of whom had to stand up. Despite the fact that the Stewart Town Council, The Bordertown Snowbombers, and all but a few people were against the tenure being rewarded, Danelle Harris of L.W.B.C. told us that the tenure could be rewarded, regardless of opposition.
The area in question is the only area accessible to snowmobilers in Stewart, and we consider this area to be our back yard. We welcome more snowmobilers from all over Canada and the United States every year, and have had people from many other countries enjoy our area as well. These visitors have helped out our struggling local economy in a big way. Snowmobiling is the town of Stewart`s main economic contributer in winter months. Stewart has not, nor do we expect to see much, if any benefit from heliskiing.
