Stop Charter School Expansion

DIRECTED to the UFT/United Federation of Teachers
We, the undersigned, are alarmed by the growing number of charter schools taking over public school buildings. While charter schools are publicly FUNDED, they are run PRIVATELY. A democratic society depends on an excellent, well-funded public school system. Access to a high quality public education is not something that should be won in a lotteryit is a most basic human and civil right. Because of this we call on the UFT to:
Take a strong, active and public stand against the invasion of charter schools into public school space, as well as the DOEs policy of giving preferential treatment to charter schools over our public schools. Instead of moving charter schools into public space, we must demand that our public schools be equitably funded and properly supported.
Actively oppose the lifting of the cap on the number of charter schools allowed in New York State.
Use its vast human and financial resources to Educate, Organize and Mobilize the membership, parents and community members around this issue, working to expose and publicize the real reasons some of our schools are struggling.
Respond with a show of true solidarity every time a school is under attack (threatened with closure or charter invasion) and organize massive protests with a particular effort to mobilize families and communities that are being affected. Hold meetings for UFT members who have charter schools in their buildings or are threatened by one coming in, so that they can plan, organize, and learn from each other.
Demand that the DOE revise its punitive system of school evaluation. We need to hold our schools accountable with a constructive system designed to build positive changes within a school. The current system seeks only to pave the way for school closures.
Mobilize citywide against public school closings. These school closings are an attempt to create more space for charter schools and further threaten the job security of public school workers. Only with a citywide fight back will we be able to expose and stop the DoEs attempts to privatize our school system.
