Stop Daycare Cuts in Waterloo Region! Support Graduate Students and their families

Graduate Students are a vital part of the university community and an integral part of the Region of Waterloo's economy. However, many graduate students with families are being forced out of their programs because they cannot shoulder the full costs of daycare. The Region of Waterloo has implemented a wait list for daycare aid for the first time in 14 years. The region has placed Graduate Students as the last priority to receive financial aid for daycare. With more than thirty-three percent of graduate students at the University of Waterloo having families, this demographic will be--and has been--greatly affected by this policy change. With costs of full-time licensed daycare soaring to between $800 and $1200 per month depending on the age of the child requiring care and TA rates paying approximately $1000.00 per month, the feasibility of paying for daycare is untenable.
I request the region of Waterloo reassess the wait list priority system and better allocate funding for daycare. I support Graduate Students and want the Region of Waterloo to invest in daycare instead of slashing funding for a necessary service. Investing in Graduate Students and their children is investing in the future vitality of the region.
