Stop Fullscreen Versions of Movies on DVD

In the field of video entertainment, wondrous advances have been made within only the last decade to make sure we enjoy the best of Hollywood in the comfort of our own homes. Surround sound systems, DVD players, high-definition television sets and DVD's themselves have only improved with each passing year, not only in quality and performance, but in affordability as well. Everything has been designed to replicate the theater experience as closely as possible.

Now...there are a lot of various things in the world today that are better off left alone. Sometimes things are only made worse or more complicated when they're changed or altered. Many people in the world are content to have these things remain as they have come to know them. Simple. Safe. Familiar. While these things can understandably be left as they've always been, the same can no longer be said of movies released on DVD.

Even with all the aforementioned advances in technology, many people are still holding on to their regular, non-HD television sets, and prefer to have their films fill the entire screen, from top to bottom and left to right. These are "fullscreen" movies, and often times, these films have been altered to accomodate the portion of the world that wants their screen filled. They feel that a "widescreen" movie, with its black bars at the top and bottom, cuts out part of the picture. Nothing could be further from the truth. It's actually the fullscreen movie that keeps you from seeing the entire scope of the movie, as the filmmakers intended. To this end, newer films have been released in separarate widescreen and fullscreen versions, to keep both sides happy. Older films that were not created in widescreen are naturally only available in fullscreen, and that's perfectly fine and understandable.

However, if you've ever looked in the bargain bins of just about any store that sells DVD's, you'll see fullscreen versions of movies left and right, unsold and unwanted. This is a growing indication that even though there may still be a market for them, less and less people desire fullscreen movies. It's an incredible waste, and should come to an easy end with an easy resolution:

"Hollywood, either release all newer movies on DVD with both fullscreen and widescreen versions in the same package, or stop making fullscreen versions of widescreen movies altogether."

This is the message of this petition...a call for the preservation of the artistic integrity of the film, with respect to the portion of the public that wants to fill its TV screen with picture. Nobody should be left out of any final decision, but urges should be made for everyone to look toward and embrace the future. Thank you for your time.
