The British Government is considering Plans to allow the Release of Genetically Modified Strain of the Diamondback Moth, which has been developed by a British Company "Oxitec". Millions will be released all carrying a lethal gene which will cause their offspring to die almost instantly resulting in the crash of the Diamond Back Moth Population. This is a UNTESTED Technology with Oxitec keen to start trials next year. Dr Helen Wallace, the director of GeneWatch UK has expressed that the release of GM Moths could be potentially disastrous. Mass releases of GM insects into the British countryside would be impossible to recall if anything went wrong,’ Although Scientists who work for Oxitec insist that GM insects are better for the environment others are not convinced. ‘GM insects that bite animals or humans could cause allergies or transmit diseases and new diseases might evolve.’ This should not be allowed to be tested, our wildlife and country side should be protected. And what is to stop these GM Insects from spreading outside of the United Kingdom?
