This petition is for students who believe that University of Maryland President C.D. Mote should apologize for slavery's input and affect on the creation of the University of Maryland. The University was founded by slaveowner Charles Calvert and several other slaveowners. President Mote has said that there is not enough clear evidence that slavery had an impact on the founding and creating of the University. Clearly, if the founder of the University was a slaveowner, then he would use his money and his free labor in creating the university. Universities such as Brown and Harvard have already issued apologies. The Univ. of MD state government is currently passing formal legislation to apologize. If you think that Mote should apologize and that there is clear enough evidence to warrant an apology, sign this petition. This is just the first step in the University creating programs and policy to help level the higher education playing field.
