RE: Suicide Barriers on the Westgate Bridge.
We the undersigned wish to express our deep concern that as a result of the government not taking preventative measures sooner, another child has lost its life.
We need to see action to ensure the tragic death of a child is never repeated and another family does not need to suffer the tragic loss as felt by the family of Darcey Freeman. We also note that this is the second time inside 12 months that a child has lost their life as a result of a "fall" from the bridge. The first being in June 2008.
Research by Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention states that 50 per cent of suicides are impulsive and preventing or hampering jumpers at known locations was a proven method of saving lives.
All of the documents made available to the public about the The Monash-CityLink-West Gate upgrade are based around freeway efficiency but they fail to mention anything about anti suicide measures.
New Zealand's Grafton Bridge, Britain's Clifton Bridge, as well as preventive measures at the Empire State Building and Eiffel Tower, has significantly reduced suicide rates.
Show us you care and are listening, install the barriers sooner rather than later.
We eagerly await your response.
