Summer Access to the WAC Video Lab

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned that the WAC video lab will be closed during the summer.

We hope the department would support the efforts of its students to remain productive over the summer and to make the most of our technological resources.

Working with video requires large chunks of time, the less distracted the better. Spending the quarters rehearsing, performing, teaching, researching, writing, reading, studying, attending meetings and programs, etc. is important and the summer is a perfect time to catch up on media production.

This is not a matter of simply backing up data with which to go work on a computer somewhere else. Most students do not have that option and need to have access to the lab to produce the materials that make WAC the best it can be. Moreover, master copies of performance videos cannot be taken from the lab and must be duplicated in the lab. Access to the lab space itself is critical.

We urge the department to reconsider denying all access to the video lab throughout the summer. If access were granted, even with hours more restricted than those during the academic year, we would make good use of our video lab.
