Support New York S6876 to Deny Funding for Aversive Treatments Used Against Developmentally Disabled Students

We, the undersigned family members and friends of the developmentally disabled, petition the New York senate to support S6876 (Senator Martin J. Golden, sponsor) to prohibit the use of public funding for the placement of children in facilities which use aversive interventions. Aversive practices include the systematic use of electric shock, sleep deprivation, withholding of bathroom privileges, and other painful, unpleasant, and humiliating treatment. Such inhumane actions are a violation of civil rights, unacceptable on both humanitarian and statutory grounds. For the safety and well-being of students incapable of defending themselves against such blatant physical and mental abuse, we urge the passage and immediate enactment of S6876.
