Zhila Izadi was thirteen when she became pregnant by her fifteen year old brother. When her baby was born, the child was removed from her mothers care, and both parents were imprisoned. Accordingly with Islamic Sharia law, Zhila is now facing death by stoning. Her brother has been sentenced to 150 lashes.
The stress and chaos this has caused for the Izadi family and their surrounding community is enormous, and the cultural pressures brought to bear of everyone involved weigh heavily.
Punishing these young people is not the answer. Rather, they need support from the international community.
We must speak out and end this kind of suffering. We call for change.
Active support for Zhila and her brother can save their lives, and act as a learning tool to change the impact of such decisions in the future. We must build public awareness of such situations.
Please add your support and endorse the following demands:
1. The government must return Zhilas baby to her care, and provide for their living expenses.
2. Zhila, her baby and her brother should receive psychological and social support to reintegrate them into society
3. Cultural pressures facing Zhilas relatives and community must be balanced by the creation of progressive institutions.
4. The government must provide sex education to teenagers to reduce the incidence of unwanted pregnancy.
