Dear Executive,
Please take notice that:
We, the undersigned members of the SLS, acknowledge that the $50 fee was passed by a majority vote at the most recent Annual General Meeting.
Furthermore, We refuse to pay the $50 fee for the following reasons:
The fee cannot be enforced by law; The fee can only be enforced by coercion, threats, peer pressure and public shame; The SLS has not provided a sound rationale for collecting $50 from each student. With an average student population of 200+ students this is a total of $10,000. There is no information on what the $10,000 is needed for. The recent SLS budget showed a surplus. The SLS has no significant regular expenses. The SLS does not give out scholarships or bursaries. The SLS regularly seeks outside sponsorship for events. The TRU student body already pays one of the highest tuitions in the country.We propose that:
The SLS Fee should be reconsidered at the next AGM. If the SLS Fee is overturned by a vote following the AGM, the money already collected should be returned to the student body. The vote should occur online with an appropriate two week time frame to allow maximum participation from the student body.
