We write to communicate our great concern about the possibility of eliminating the multicultural studies requirement for University of California, Irvine. A multicultural studies requirement is essential to students learning how different cultures interact to shape individual identity.
Given the instances of hate on various campuses in the University of California system just this year, it is clear that the campus community lacks a general understanding of other cultures. In order to foster a safe campus without discrimination, students must understand others' identities.
We are opposed to the elimination of the multicultural studies requirement and want our UC education to reflect the tapestry of cultures at UCI. Please let this multicultural studies requirement stand.
