Dear President Bush,
Both the UN and the World Health Organization (WHO) now acknowledge that the earthquake which struck South Asia on October 8, 2005, with its epicenter in northern Pakistan, is a greater catastrophe than last years tsunami in terms of the number of people made homeless and the extent of destruction to infrastructure.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has warned the international community that any delay in relief efforts would mean a second, massive wave of death. Mr. Annan has also noted that there is a growing sense of desperation among the people waiting for assistance because in the most affected areas hospitals, schools, water systems and roads had all been destroyed.
According to the Pakistan government, Pakistan desperately needs at least another 50 helicopters to reach thousands of injured and sick locked up in inaccessible mountainous areas. These helicopters are needed for transportation of food, medicine, tents, blankets and clothes. They are also needed to take care of hundreds of sprawling tent-cities during the fast-approaching winter.
As US citizens we thank you for all that you and your administration have done to help people of Pakistan. But much more needs to be done and time is of the essence.
Mr. President, please act now and help save tens of thousands of lives by authorizing immediate dispatch of 50 helicopters to Pakistan.
