We the people of the Wiccan nation have started a petition against the North Kansas City School District. Our reasons for these allegations are the unlawful and unconstitutional treatment of the Wiccan religion in our schools. These treatments include banning of our religious symbols and practices, and inappropriate comments by teachers and staff for representing and/or practicing our religion. The staff at winnetonka has influenced our fellow students by false accusations about our religion. One teacher stated, Wiccans get their powers from the devil! which several other Wiccan followers and I can disprove.
We also petition on behalf of all secular religions considered a minority by others to be wrong or stupid all of which I consider uneducated assumptions. My belief is that of the board is to ban one religion, they should ban them all. Kids, even teachers are wearing crosses, a symbol of Christianity. And if they can wear their crosses we should be able to wear our pentagrams. Stated one student I spoke with while walking down the halls of Winnetonka High School. Why arent we all equal stated another. The answer still eludes me.
Another reason we petition is that the board will not let teachers teach about Wiccans or pagans. Maybe its because of the uneducated people of the board itself. It could be, and probably is that there is still discrimination against these religions. I dont know, but I know someone needs to get this straight. If no one else will then thats why Im stepping up.
My name is Alex Dycus, and I challenge you to ask yourself why we hate, and why do people still discriminate when the constitution clearly states, under the 1st amendment that people are free to express their religion. But still people disregard the fact that one has a right to his/her own opinion. You have to ask yourself, who is the one who is in the wrong; the one who has the wrong religion, or the one who accuses someone of having the wrong religion.
