Subject: Citizens demand to constitute a fact-finding enquiry into the communal violence at Sanvordem
Sir,
Since the shocking communal violence at Sanvordem-Curchorem last month, there have been demands from various quarters of Goan society for the government to constitute an independent fact-finding committee into the events at Sanvordem-Curchorem and to bring out a white paper on the issue so that the people may know the truth. Despite repeated appeals, the government has taken no action in this matter. Civil society organisations have made courageous attempts to reveal the truth, but this in no way absolves the government of its primary responsibility in the matter. The least we owe the victims is that the truth be revealed and justice be seen to be done.
We, the undersigned citizens, demand that the government constitute a committee at the earliest, and present a detailed report of the committees findings, so that the people may know the truth, and those responsible may be brought to book. It is only through such means that we can prevent further vitiation of the peaceful atmosphere of Goa by communal elements.
Cc: 1. Governor of Goa
2. Chief Secretary, Government of Goa
