With this petition, I hope to gain supporters in an area that I believe the citizens are being shut-out on. Airdrie is long over-due for a Junior A, AJHL team and the time is now for us to make a stand. To bring in a team we would need to first build an arena with a capacity of at least 1200 people. The arena could cost upwards of $10M. This petition is to not only express our opinion on this matter but to also show potential investors in this arena that Airdrie can support a Junior A team.
Brooks currently holds an arena and a Junior A team. They easily support this team and have an arena that can seat/stand approximately 2200 people. The last three games that I went and watched in Brooks there was never less then 1600 people attending these games. Brooks has a population of 13,676 according to there 2011 census. Airdrie has a population of 43,155 according to their census of the same year.
The younger citizens of Airdrie have consistently complained that there is nothing to do for entertainment in Airdrie. During the cold winter months the most popular place to visit is the movie theatre, or the newly built Cross Iron Mills. With a Junior A team Airdrie will not only have some very high-paced and high-skilled hockey to go watch week in and out but they will also have another source of entertainment.
These are just a few arguments that I have for this problem, there are still many to be addressed. I hope that this petition can enlighten the City Council of Airdrie, the AMHA and possible investors in this opportunity. So if you would like to see a step in the right direction in Airdrie please take the time to sign this petition as it is only the first step in a long progress.
