The Crescent City Classic 10 kilometer footrace is one of New Orleans' most important treasures. Each Easter weekend, thousands participate in an event which impacts our city's economy, promotes wellness, showcases some of Louisiana's finest runners and walkers, all while opening our city and neighborhoods to outsiders during the holiday weekend. While this race features some of the most intense competition among international and Olympic-caliber athletes, it is perhaps best known for its post-race party. We have all heard stories of the hundred thousand plus parties on the "fly" behind the Audubon Zoo.
In 1999, due to an inability to agree upon the terms of use between Audubon Nature Institute and the Crescent City Classic, the race was moved from its historic course on Prytania Street to an equally fast and differently charming course which ends in City Park near Tad Gormley Stadium. The post race party now takes place within a much smaller area within the stadium.
Much like McKenzie's buttermilk drops or K&B, the "fly" postrace party is hallowed speak among New Orleanians. Whether you're a runner, a walker or neither of the two, you've enjoyed yourself with tens of thousands at that venue.
Wouldn't you like to see the "old course" and "old postrace party" become a permanent reality for our city's future? Rumor has it that some no longer participate because of this change... This race needs to be huge. It needs to be what it once was. This is certainly a change for the right direction.
