California's Safe Haven Law

We the undersigned believe that more needs to be done to get the word out about Californias Safe Haven law. It is a law that allows a parent to drop off their newborn child at any fire station or hospital, no questions asked. The fact that babies are still abandoned by their parents is proof enough that the word is not getting out in an effective manner to the people.

When the law was enacted in 2001 every news program and newspaper discussed it. Currently posters can be found in some classrooms across the state advocating the Safe Haven law. Unfortunately, aside from these posters, the law is never mentioned in a public forum except when another abandoned baby is found.

We believe that this is completely unacceptable and feel that our elected officials need to do more to ensure that people are made aware of this law. Some suggestions include billboards and public service announcements on the television and radio. Additionally, the message should be distributed in several languages, not just English. Costs should be minimal and could probably be covered through private and corporate sponsorships.
