Dear President Herd,
First of all, we would like to offer our sincerest thanks to you and your organization. All the women in your organization deserve the thanks and gratitude of the entire nation. Without your sacrifices, Fascism, Communism and religious fundamentalism would have certainly threatened our American way of life. All Americans owe you and your families a debt of gratitude.
Recent events concerning your organization and a mother who lost a son in Afghanistan have caught our attention. According to published reports Ligaya Lagmans application for membership was rejected because although a taxpayer and permanent resident she is not a US citizen. Staff Sergeant Anthony Lagman served honorably in Afghanistan, he is an American hero and true patriot. Mrs. Lagman deserves the recognition of being a Gold Star Mother.
We do not believe that a non citizen who loses a child mourns differently than a US citizen.
We do not believe that her loss is any less significant than that of a US citizen.
We do believe that Staff Sergeant Lagmans sacrifice has made this a country more secure for future generations.
We urge you to strongly reconsider and reevaluate the membership criteria for The American Gold Star Mothers Inc.
Over 68,000 immigrants are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces representing 5 \% of the total active duty force. Are you willing to reject a potential 68,000 applications due to archaic rules?
With the exception of Native Americans, all Americans are either the descendents of revolutionaries or immigrants.

This is all about honoring ALL of those who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our nation. A mother's loss should be so recognized without regards to her citizenship.
