WE DEMAND THAT COLLEGE BE KEPT AFFORABLE FOR ALL CITIZENS OF THE COMMONWEALTH (HB 1359-Chartered Universities Initiative)

We, the undersigned, are concerned that the Charter Initiative permits the University of Virginia, William and Mary, and Virginia Tech to raise tuition for in-state students to market rate without obligating these same institutions to increase financial aid for lower- and middle-income students. We request that the Legislature and the Governor NOT grant tuition-setting authority to these schools without also obligating them to increase financial aid in step with tuition. While there are valid arguments for raising tuition to one degree or another, a college education must remain affordable for Commonwealth citizens of modest means.
