China Should Support Human Rights in Darfur

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the continued suffering of civilians in Darfur, Sudan, and eastern Chad. We therefore strongly urge the Government of China to take steps to protect these vulnerable people. The Government of China is not yet adequately using its considerable influence to end this human rights catastrophe in Darfur. The conflict in the Darfur region of western Sudan and in eastern Chad has led to some of the worst human rights abuses imaginable, including systematic and widespread murder, rape, abduction, and displacement. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been killed by both deliberate and indiscriminate attacks, and more than 2.5 million civilians have been displaced. We urge China to bear the responsibility of a world leader to respect and actively work to protect human rights in Darfur.
