Equal Opportunity Diploma

Did you know that the state of SC does not give every student the opportunity to earn a diploma? SC is a state that still believes in a seat time certificate. Some students with disabilities do not have the same opportunity to earn a diploma as their nondisabled peers because they are placed on an alternate education track. Upon graduation they will receive a certificate of attendance instead of a diploma. The state of SC has made accommodations and modifications to the curriculum, standards, assessments, etc., but they do not have modified requirements for earning a diploma. These students are required to come to school just as their nondisabled peers. Their goals are based upon curriculum standards, and they work hard to achieve these goals. In the end, SC is saying to them that their efforts did not matter. SC needs to award these students for their achievements and accomplishments. By signing this petition, you are agreeing that SC needs to develop alternate graduation requirements and recognize the SC Alt as an alternative assessment to the Exit Exam.
