RE: Proposed Public Skateboard Park in Ward 6
(Etobicoke-Lakeshore)
We are a broad coalition of citizens, taxpayers, parents, members and supporters of the Toronto skateboard community. We, the undersigned, believe that any skateboard park (skatepark) funded by the City of Toronto should:
1. Be designed and built by qualified and experienced skateboard contractors;
2. include local skaters in their design;
3. be open and accessible to all members of the public, especially at risk youth;
4. have a creative mix of street obstacles (rails, fun boxes, launch ramps etc.) and transition / vertical terrain (quarter pipes, bowls, mini-ramps, half-pipes etc.);
5. not require skaters or their parents to sign waivers;
6. encourage skaters to look after their own safety and the safety of others without restricting their access to the park or over-regulating the use of it;
7. be open during daylight hours, 365 days a year; and
8. not charge an entrance fee.
Accordingly, we the undersigned oppose any joint venture indoor skateboard park facility in Etobocoke Lakeshore (Ward 6) between the City of Toronto and the C.J. Skateboard Park and School Inc as outlined in Notice of Motion EY#20.54,moved by Councillor Saundercook and dated November 8, 2008.
We the undersigned urge the City of Toronto to rescind motion EY#20.54. No public money should be allocated to any joint-venture with an already existing skatepark owned by a private enterprise; be it for-profit, not-for-profit or non-profit.
