Force Insurance Companies to Lower Hurricane Deductables

Currently, the standard deductible for most insurance carriers in Florida, for home owners insurance claims due to hurricane damage, is a shocking 2\%. This became a standard number after the devastation of hurricane Andrew in south Florida. This is price gouging, plain and simple. This costly deductible comes after the expense to even survive after such a storm. The insurance companies are taking advantage of individuals who may have lost everything due to a hurricane.
Most home owners can not afford the out of pocket cost to pay for the deductible (that they must pay) to have their homes repaired or rebuilt. For many, they will have to put out thousands of dollars from their own pocket because of how high the deductibles are. Others are told by their insurance adjuster that they would be better off just paying for the entire cost of repairs from their own pocket to save money. If this is the case, why do we have home owners insurance in the first place?
Therefore, we ask that our lawmakers take steps to protect the victims of hurricanes, by limiting the deductible that home owner insurance carriers may charge consumers in the wake of a hurricane. Thank you.
