Free SMA blood tests to STOP babies being born with SMA

Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a genetic illness that kills children. 1 in 38 people are a carrier of this genetic disorder. When two people connect to create a child that both have this genetic disease then you have a 1 in 4 chance of creating a child with SMA type 1 (kills by age 2) or type 2 (puts children in a wheel chair early and will eventually kill). If women were aware that they are a carrier then they know their partner needs to be tested before the start having children to prevent this.

Currently the blood test is expensive, most women are not aware of the disease or the need to get tested. You only need to be tested once to know. If you don't have it you have nothing to worry about but if you do then you know to get your partner tested before you have children. We believe this test should be available to all women and should be a routine test that is covered but the PBS.
