I began working in the City of Fullerton, California in 1997. I used
to see the Fullerton Observer in a restaurant I used to attend, and
occasionally would read the paper. Every so often, if I pass a stand
with the paper in it, I would pick up the paper to take with me.
October 21, 2003, around 3pm, my coworker Kimberlee called the
Fullerton Observer at (714) 525-6402. She asked if she could find out
about "Display Ad" rates. The lady (whom never gave us her name)
asked, "What is your business name?" Kimberlee said, "Fullerton Spa."
The woman on the phone asked what we offered and Kimberlee
said, "Massage and Skincare such as Facials and Waxing." The woman on
the phone said she wanted to speak to the manager. Kimberlee handed
me (Mimi) the phone and I said, "Hello." The woman said, "Do you have
a fax number?" I said, "I don't," when Kimberlee said, "I have a fax
number, but there's a code or something you have to do first." I told
the woman that Kimberlee could speak to her about the fax. The lady
asked Kimberlee, "How old is your boss?" Kimberlee said, "25." The
lady said, "She doesn't sound old enough to be anyone's boss. You
guys sound really young." Kimberlee said, "Well, she's 25 and I'm
31." The lady said, "You guys don't do any prostitution there?"
Kimberlee said, "No, all those places got closed down out of
Fullerton." Then the lady told Kimberlee she would fax rates over.
Before hanging up, Kimberlee asked, "Why did you ask how old we
were?" The woman on the phone said, "I can ask whatever I want." I
was so offended.

Later on, I called my partner, Mike, at home, and I told him what
happend. He called The Fullerton Observer and the same woman answered
the phone. He said, "I'm wondering about rates for an ad." The lady
said, "What is the name of your business?" He said, "Fullerton Health
Center." She said, "They already called." He said, "Actually, I would
like to know why someone at your company would ask a customer how old
they were and if they were doing prostitution?" She said, "You know
what, I don't want to put YOUR ad in our paper." She hung up.

I consider this complete discrimination on our age and profession.
I'm asking people to not call about putting your ad in the Fullerton
Observer and just letting everybody know that they discriminated
against a legit massage establishment/dayspa. If you feel they were
in error, please sign the petition.
