Give Chipman a key to the city

Mayor Sam Katz has taken a lot of heat in recent days about handing out keys to the city to a less than desirable role model.
KISS frontman Gene Simmons received his key last week and the uproar was deafening.
According to the mayor, the deal is the key is a marketing tool to get people to say nice things about our city in their travels.
If that’s really the case, then it’s a fine weapon for combatting our city’s image as being a crime-ridden, mosquito-infested backwater that may or may not have running water.
However, if Katz would like to put a little shine back on the key to our city, at least locally, we have a suggestion: True North Sports and Entertainment owner Mark Chipman.
This man did more for Winnipeg’s civic pride with one simple announcement than any of our politicians have been able to accomplish in years.
With his announcement that his group purchased the Atlanta Thrashers and would move that team here for play in the fall, the swell of pride was palpable.
People who don’t care about hockey trotted out cliches like: “This really puts us back on the map.”
No matter how tired that line is, it’s true.
Travel outside our city and country and say you’re from Winnipeg and people often said things like, “Sorry about your loss. Man, you guys really shouldn’t have lost the NHL.” Well, no more.
The Jets were part of our identity. Even now, people are having heated debates over the virtues of naming the new Winnipeg hockey club the Jets, or something else.
If anyone truly deserves to be handed a key to our city it’s Mark Chipman.
