Keep Professor Dan Mrozowski at U of M

We have just found out that Professor Dan Mrozowski is set to leave the university. Professor Mrozowski is one of the best professors we have had. For many of us, he is the best ever. He goes far beyond the requirements of his job, taking a personal interest in students, suggesting that we do things we would not have thought of (such as UROP), working on directed studies, reading for summa theses, and in general, caring enough to truly change students' lives. It is inexcusable that he was not offered a contract months ago so that he did not have to continue looking for a job, not knowing if he would have one next fall. We are tired of the fact that students' experiences with our professors do not seem to matter at all when hiring and tenure-track decisions are made. There is a lot of talk about 'community' but we will never have a genuine community here if the professors we count on can just be taken away at the whims of administrators.

We want you to do everything in your power to keep him. If that is not possible for the coming year because of his own situation now, we want him offered a tenure-track position for the following year. And we want students to be part of the decision-making in who our professors are. This is a public university which is supposed to serve the needs of its students, first and foremost. There wouldn't be a university without students.
