On 9 June 2009, a Lufthansa flight took over four hours to land because of a crater at one end of the runway and high tailwind at the other. The aircraft with 225 passengers on board had to fly to Hyderabad after circling the airport for 45 minutes and making two abortive landing attempts from the southern side between 11 and 11.44pm on Monday (Source: The Telegraph dated Wednesday, 10 June 2009, Kolkata).
And recalling that:
The Kolkata (then Dum Dum airport) airport was historically a major focal point from the early days of civil aviation in the Indian subcontinent
Therefore, we request the authorities to consider the following:
Facilities for safe and timely arrivals and departures to and from the Kolkata airport with extended runways and by providing up-to-date landing instruments
Improved and modern passenger services including functional jet-bridges and efficient baggage handling, clearance
The airport operation and maintenance be brought to a standard at par with the latest airport best practices that are in place in other metropolitan airports in India and elsewhere
The previously reported Kolkata airport expansion plans and/or building of a new to be given serious and immediate consideration.
