PARLIAMENT UNDER THREAT FROM HOME GROWN TERRORISM

Never before has a government been willing to sell the sanctity of our Temples of Democracy to convicts in order to save itself.

March 3, 2007, Times of India front page screams out a headline: Immediate Disqualification of MPs Found Guilty By Courts Will Rock Coalitions, Centre Tells Supreme Court. Let convicted MPs stay or governments will fall

Unbelievable but sadly true! For it appears that in order to ensure the continuation of the UPA government our political leaders are more than willing to not just condone but also protect persons convicted of heinous and other grave crimes regardless of the irreparable damage they will do to what we are so often told are the Temples of Democracy.

The legal subterfuge is a clause in the Representation of the Peoples Act (what a travesty on the Peoples of India) which permits elected members to continue in office while their convictions are in appeal while disqualifying candidates in similar circumstances.

This latest plea is in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), admitted in the Supreme Court, seeking to cease this distinction, making it mandatory for all convicted MPs and MLAs to resign their membership of our Temples of Democracy.

Recently, the government had okayed a proposal to amend Section 19 of the Prevention of Corruption Act in order to widen its ambit of protection to retired public servants, including retired legislators.

It is truly worrying that the current government is so overactive in setting up conditions to protect criminal elements from being brought to justice.

Our Plea as Citizens of India is for the Supreme Courtincreasingly the last resort to protect our threatened democracy.to ensure the sanctity of Parliament & Legislators by rejecting this argument and accepting the PIL petition.

Just imagine the horrendous impact on peoples perceptions, values and beliefs if the governments argument that accepting convicted felons can be condoned if it serves their narrow interest in retaining office.

In contrast just think of the beneficial impact of the realization that criminals will have no place in these hallowed institutions. Perhaps this might be the start of the decriminalisation of politics.
