Maintain Canadian diplomatic presence in Milan

Milan is the economic and financial capital of Italy, Canadas eleventh largest trading partner. Abandonment of a Canadian mission in the Italian north where the greater part of business and industry is concentrated will hamper Italian-Canadian business growth and commercial relations. The Consulate General has been instrumental in increasing Italian investment in Canada more than fourfold in recent years, one example being the investment by the Ferrero company which established a plant in Canada creating valuable jobs. Abandonment of this dynamic mission in the face of the current federal surplus is a short-sighted response to managing a valuable trade relationship.
The Consulate General also provides essential consular assistance to Canadians travelling in Northern Italy with such important tourist destinations as Milan, Genoa, Turin, Verona, and Venice as well as to Canadian citizens residing in its consular area.
We strongly urge that the cost-effectiveness of closing the Consulate General in Milan be reconsidered. We are confident that a careful analysis will not support the total abandonment of this mission, and that whatever changes may be required to strengthen Canada's overall diplomatic function in Italy can better be made by preserving than by closing the Milan establishment.
