Since the closing of the The Scrantonian-Tribune in 1990, Scranton area residents have been a captive audience to daily newspapers owned and operated by the Lynett family. Today there is only one daily paper covering Scranton and Lackawanna County news: The Times-Tribune, commonly referred to as The Scranton Times.
The Times-Tribune has consistently behaved in a manner that is at odds with the established code of ethics for journalism. It has failed to produce any meaningful body of investigative journalism, has produced shamefully biased articles, and has engaged in egregious conflicts of interest. With regards to local politics, especially Scranton city business, it does not seek or report the truth, and it goes out of its way to harm and slander certain politicians and citizens while seeking no accountability from others.
All this, and the fact that The Times-Tribune is the area's only daily paper, has left much of the population in the dark. We believe that a competing newspaper would help bring an end to this sad state of affairs.
Therefore, the below taxpayers, civic leaders, and community minded individuals request that you begin publishing a daily newspaper that covers the news events of Lackawanna County. Each of the undersigned pledges to subscribe to this newspaper, should you print it.
