For almost 20 years Michaels Ave reserve has been a spray free multi purpose public space, meeting the needs of everyone, from soccer players to preschoolers, dog walkers to native wildlife breeding in the restored wetland.
After a non notified consent process the Auckland council has begun ripping up the field closest to the wetland reserve, to replace the grass with artificial turf. The needs of everyone has been ignored for the needs of the few.
There is concern for the health of the preschool children who attend the kindergarten some metres from the field, who grow and eat vegetables along the fence line.
There is concern for the water run off from the reconstituted rubber turf, as water in this region naturally drains into the wetland reserve.
There is concern for the health of the park, reversing 20 years organic management
There is concern about the privitisation that will result in fencing off a once open a public space to be used only by those who pay sports club fees.
There is concern for the breeding habitat of the native wildlife who live in Michaels Ave Reserve.
