PETITION to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
WHEREAS the people of Peterborough have consistently stated their opposition to having a casino in the City of Peterborough, through the referendum of 1997 (65%), a professional telephone survey (May 2013, 68%) and the mandatory public meeting held by City Council (March 5th and 18th, 2013)which were well attended and showed overwhelming opposition to a casino and a written petition to the City Council with 2300 signatures; and
WHEREAS Peterborough City Council continues to uphold their decision of March 18th supporting the establishment of a casino in Peterborough, we are appealing directly to the Province.
WE the undersigned petition to pass an amendment to the legislation passed in 2011 which removed the mandating of a referendum before a casino could be imposed by a vote of City Council; such an amendment would reinstate the mandating of the referendum, which referendum to be held at the time of the municipal election in October 2014.
