We Say No to the Mayoral Takeover of DC Public Schools!
As concerned DCPS parents, students, teachers and DC residents we demand the following:
1) Ensure Democracy for All DC Residents
The Mayors takeover legislation should not move forward until Wards 4 & 7 have elected Councilmembers. Do not disenfranchise DC residents by going to Congress. Instead DC residents should vote on any changes to the DCPS governance structure by referendum.
2) DC Public Schools Should Remain Governed by the Elected School Board.
The Mayor and City Council should support our School Board and Superintendent by providing the resources needed to improve our schools.
3) No Additional Bureaucracy
Accountability and improved student performance can be achieved without adding another layer of bureaucracy to the school system.
4) Provide Real Opportunities for Parents, Students and Teachers to Affect DCPS Policy.
Listen to parents, students and teachers first before consultants and out of town experts.
5) ImproveDC Agencies That Impact Children and Families.
The DC Council and Mayor should focus their efforts on improving services that affect our children like homeless services, affordable housing, mental health services, juvenile justice, and healthcare.
