No Turning Back: ABOLITION NOW

-At least 18 innocent men have been sentenced to death in Illinois.
-Nearly 70\% of Illinois death row prisoners (prior to the blanket commutations) were Black or Latino. Race is an undeniable factor in who gets the death penalty.
-Police, prosecutorial and judicial misconduct plague the criminal justice system. The cases of the Death Row 10 all African American men who were brutally tortured by Chicago police and forced into giving confessions that were used to sentence them to death are case and point. Four of the Death Row 10 were pardoned by former Gov. George Ryan.
-Defendants have been repeatedly represented by under funded and inadequate legal defense. Those who are sentenced to death are disproportionately poor.
-The death penalty is used as a political tool by politicians promoting a tough on crime agenda. It does not deter crime.
-The death penalty has cost Illinois taxpayers over $1 billion since 1977 while funding for social services has been cut.
Therefore, we call on the Illinois State Legislature to pass Senate Bill 328, which abolishes the death penalty in Illinois.
