NO TO PETTY CALCULATIONS, YES TO DEMOCRATIC REFORMS
Speculations are rampant over a federal election soon to be held,another in less than a year. In the wake of Justice Gomerys inquiry,our elected officials are engaging in their customary partisancalculations on how to make the most out of the political practisesscandal currently rife on the federal scene.
The scope of this dismal corruption case evokes feelings rangingbetween shame and disillusionment, dismay and outrage. This shockwaveerodes the trust people have in institutions, fomenting disenchantmentwith our political system. This feeling is deepened by the dailyexchanges of parliamentarians who indulge in meaningless cockfights.
This petition is not about supporting the desperate attempts of theLiberal party of Canada to hang on to power, but rather about exposingthis dirty business in order to prompt necessary reforms.The crisis runs deep and it requires that we strike at the roots ofthis evil to eradicate this corruption worthy only of banana republicsand small potentates. In order to rehabilitate our political practises,to restore some legitimacy to those who are (temporarily) in power andto reinstate the trust people have in political institutions, thingsmust be done thoroughly. The truth must be exposed and new rules mustbe set down, especially on the financing of political parties, on theextent and use of discretionary budgets and on the accountability ofelected officials and senior public servants, and to review the votingprocedure as well.
For this reason, we, Canadian citizens, strongly oppose an electionbeing called for prematurely before the final report of the GomeryCommission comes out and we call upon your fellow citizens to abstainfrom voting, if our elected officials do turn a deaf ear.
The quality of the politics and the democracy we value is indeed atstake.
