WE CAN DO BETTER
We are opposed to this unnecessary Tim Hortons expansion because we know that UofT can do better. Students gave UofT a failing grade (D) on food services in the National Survey on Student Engagement (NSSE) saying the university lacks healthy, diverse, and affordable food options [1]. Further, students have consistently asked for more halal, kosher, and vegetarian food options.
How has the university responded? By removing student space for the expansion of Tim Hortons (Sid Smith caf), Second Cup (Sid Smith lobby), and Subway (Robarts) rewarding these businesses for providing us with their overpriced, unhealthy, non-fair-trade food options.
Due to the lack of food options, students have started their own initiatives such as the Hot Yam vegan food collective, the student-run fair trade coffee house at Vic (Caffeinds), and Diabolos out of the Junior Common Room. These are examples of the excellent quality, affordable, and equitable food services that the university should be supporting.
The Sid Smith caf used to be a student-run pub called The Hangar [2] until it was taken away by the administration and turned into a bland corporate cafeteria. By contracting out, we lost student-run space and inherited Sodexho (now Aramark) management who refuse to treat their workers fairly and pay decent wages [3] despite higher prices and increased profits off the backs of hungry students.
Enough is enough.
WE SAY:
1. No to the Tim Hortons Expansion in the Sid Smith Caf
2. Yes to Healthy, Diverse, and Affordable Food Options
3. Yes to Halal, Kosher, and Vegetarian Food Options
4. Yes to Workers Rights Living Wages and Fair Conditions
5. Give us The Hangar Back Commit to Returning Student-Run Space
