Open Letter to 10 Downing Street
The Egyptian Solidarity Campaign Group in the United Kingdom is deeply concerned by the recent events in Egypt. Millions of Egyptians from all walks of life have taken to the streets since the 25th of January, 2011, requesting the downfall of its oppressive regime and specifically its dictator, President Hosni Mubarak, who has for 30 years systematically denied Egyptian citizens their basic social, political, and human rights and has ruled by fear, intimidation, and 30 years of Emergency Law. However, until today President Hosni Mubarak has refused to listen to his people and has instead reacted by instigating violence towards the peaceful protestors and promoting terror throughout the country.
In addition, security services and government sponsored thugs have purposefully attacked peaceful protestors (men, women, and children) and selected sites and buildings and this has lead to hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries. Furthermore, the international media has been isolated and intimidated, communications in the country have been severely restricted, and Egyptian state television has all but denied the events and provided pro-Mubarak propaganda and disinformation. It is our view that Hosni Mubaraks continued leadership is a detriment to stability within the country and towards the world as a whole.
Furthermore, several reliable sources are now estimating President Hosni Mubarak and his familys fortune at around 40-70 billion US$. If this proves to be true, it is further evidence towards his corruption and theft of the country he has purportedly ruled. All the points above emphatically implicate that President Hosni Mubarak and his corrupt regime cannot be trusted in power for a single day more.
We cannot stand and watch this reprehensible situation and urge the international community to put firm pressure on President Hosni Mubarak and his regime to categorically stand down immediately and allow for democratic reform that the Egyptian people are aspiring to.
On behalf of the Egyptian Solidarity Campaign,
Professor M. Mounir Shahin, Chairman
