As students, faculty, and staff of the University of Georgia, we are petitioning for more paper recycling by having more accessible recycling bins, resources, and awareness around campus. Each month the University of Georgia is known to waste around 450 tons of paper, which amounts to approximately 65 percent of all trash from the University.
Research has shown that the majority of landfills are made up of paper products which are known to decompose at a very slow rate. In fact, studies have shown newspapers are still legible even forty years after being transported to a landfill.
We acknowledge that there are already some efforts being made to redress the abundance of waste on campus. However, by signing this petition, we are lending our support to creating more productivity, saving more money, and raising awareness in relation to paper waste on campus.
